[VIDEO] EVENFLOW Use Case Webinar on Personalised Medicine

The EVENFLOW Use Case Webinar titled Breast Cancer: Current Challenges was held on 1 October 2024 from 11.00-12.00 CEST exploring the use of AI and forecasting techniques in personalised medicine and focusing on the critical issue of Breast Cancer. Dr. Miguel Angel Quintela, a physician-scientist specialising in breast oncology, discussed general concepts about breast cancer for non-specialised audiences and provided his view about the current challenges that the disease poses, from a clinical standpoint, while Dr. Davide Cirillo, our partner from Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), talked about Personalised Medicine, which is one of the three EVENFLOW Use Cases.

Watch the video of the webinar:

EVENFLOW project is focused on developing cutting-edge hybrid learning techniques for complex event forecasting, combining deep learning with logic-based reasoning to build neuro-symbolic forecasting models. The project is tackling three pivotal use cases: Personalised Medicine, Industry 4.0, and Infrastructure Life Cycle Assessment.

Dr. Miguel Angel Quintela bio: Miguel is a physician-scientist specialising in breast oncology, integrating clinical practice with laboratory research. His academic background includes an MD and PhD in medicine, board certification in medical oncology, and a master’s degree in biostatistics, earned in Madrid and Barcelona. He also completed a clinical fellowship in Phase I Trials and Drug Development at Princess Margaret Hospital and a postdoctoral research fellowship in cancer metabolism and immunology at the Ontario Cancer Institute. Currently, he serves as the group leader of the Breast Cancer Unit at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) and as Director of the Clinical Research Program. The CNIO is one of Europe’s top three cancer research centres, and the Clinical Research Program bridges clinical oncology with basic research, advancing findings through observational and interventional trials. Additionally, he holds a dual appointment at Hospital 12 de Octubre, where his clinical research activities are based, and serves as an Associate Professor at the Endowed Chair in Personalised and Precision Medicine at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. His research has led to significant discoveries, including predictive factors for paclitaxel, development of a phosphoproteomic taxonomy for triple-negative breast cancer, and advancements in liquid biopsy techniques, among other contributions implemented in clinical trials.

Dr. Davide Cirillo bio: Davide is the head of the Machine Learning for Biomedical Research Unit at the Life Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). His research focuses on computational methods for precision medicine with a special emphasis on machine learning, network science, and ethics of Artificial Intelligence. He is the co-editor of the book “Sex and Gender Bias in Technology and Artificial Intelligence: Biomedicine and Healthcare Applications” (Elsevier).
